The Coach House at Agatha, near Tzaneen and just an hour from Phalaborwa and the Kruger National Park, is a small friendly hotel standing near the site of the staging post built in 1892.

The five star Coach House built in 1983 was built on the foundation of the old Strachan hotel and a few of the old walls and cast iron windows are still in place today.  The philosophy is to provide good food, comfortable accommodation and friendly service in an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity and, with this in mind, children under 14 years are not permitted.

At 1100 metres above sea level, the hotel enjoys a balmy, cool and frost-free climate.  At this altitude there is absolutely no risk of malaria.  Each of the rooms has an uninterrupted view of the Drakensberg Range, stretching 100km from north to south.  Comfortably furnished, the bedrooms have handcrafted Kiaat furniture and custom-made two metre long beds.  The double rooms all have wood burning fireplaces and guests are encouraged to light the kindling and enjoy the glow and warmth of a real fire on a cool winter’s night.

The dining room is well known for it’s excellent food, as much as possible of which is fresh, locally grown fruit, vegetables and nuts (a great deal of which comes from the owner, Guy Matthews’ farms),

The swimming pool overlooks the valley below, with mountains beyond, and guests can enjoy cool refreshing drinks and poolside lunches under the umbrellas.  For those who wish to relax, unwind and enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa, Agatha is the place.  The bird life is abundant and diverse and the gardens invite one to stroll at a leisurely pace.  Guests are welcome to walk anywhere on the 560-hectare farm, on which the hotel is situated, much of which is planted with Macadamia and Pecan nuts.  A detailed map of walks is available at reception. 

You can also have unlimited free use of the Agatha Spa Sensorium (steam rooms, sauna, hot thermal pool, gymnasium).

Rates up to 30 November 2008 start from £73 per person per night sharing twin and include breakfast, free use of the spa and a complimentary welcome drink, early morning beverages and rusks.
