FREE SPARKLING TOUR
The Diamond Works in Cape Town

The Diamond Works in Cape Town is a jewellery destination where visitors can learn about the art of diamond cutting, witness the make up of jewellery pieces and see and purchase the finished product. A young team of experienced, multi-lingual jewellery consultants provide a friendly and relaxed environment for customers.

The Diamond Works consists of a fully operational diamond-cutting workshop, staffed by diamond cutters from previously disadvantaged communities who are all graduates from the Harry Oppenheimer Diamond Cutting School in Johannesburg.  They will each facet and polish approximately 4 to 6 diamonds a day.

There are goldsmiths in the jewellery manufacturing workshop who have all completed a four year apprenticeship and work to very high standards.  Only 18-carat white and yellow gold and platinum are used in the workshop.  The goldsmiths have "aprons" hanging in front of their workbench to catch gold/platinum off-cuts and dust as well as the odd diamond that might fall.  All the metal waste is kept separate and is then recycled.

The Tanzanite boutique portrays a large selection of this exquisite violet-blue precious gemstone.

Discovered in 1967 and found only in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, the legend tells that the land was set alight by a bolt of lightning.  The effect of the heat transformed the crystals into the beautiful blue stones.  Described as the investment gem of the millennium, Tanzanite is a diminishing resource, with less than a decade before its single source is depleted.

Showcases of beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery adorn the showroom, along with loose stones should a personal design be preferred.  An internet cafe offers refreshments and an opportunity to email home completes the picture.
