Shortly after we arrived and had eaten our
lunch, we set off on out first game drive of the trip, to Crooks corner. I have
to say this was one of my favourite parts of the trip. Climbing down into the
dry Limpopo river bed, standing by (not too close) crocs and hippos as the sun
set where three countries meet – South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. It was
magical.
We then continued on our drive seeing
unusual sightings whilst in a Fever tree forest, such as bush babies (lesser and
thick tailed), a genet, a civet, chameleons and a pearl spotted owl. On our way
back towards the lodge we stopped to see if there was any activity around the
carcass of a young buffalo that we had seen earlier lying in the Luvuvhu River.
Once there we all hopped off the land rover
and peered over the bridge with the spotlight (it was very dark by now). Below
us two crocs were attempting to eat the baby buffalo but not succeeding very
well. After a few minutes it was time to head back, we had to continue over the
bridge to turn around, but as our tracker raised his spotlight, low and behold
there were 2 lions on the prowl… We moved closer to only about 30m away, to get
a better look. We then heard a rustle behind us and out of the bushes emerged
another lion, only about 10m from the bridge! We were all so pleased to see
these magnificent cats but were glad we had got back on the vehicle as they
looked very thin and hungry and had been heading our way!
We got back to the lodge and had a lovely
dinner and relived our close encounter before heading off to our “space” where I
had the best nights sleep of my life! |
